
New job rules in Oman: These roles now require a permit

The Ministry of Labor has introduced new regulations. These regulations require mandatory professional certification for work permits in Oman’s accounting sector. They are also required in the engineering sector.

Effective August 1, 2025, the ministry will no longer issue work permits for individuals working under the designation of “engineer.” It will also not renew these work permits. Individuals must show a valid professional classification certificate. The certificate must be obtained through the Oman Society of Engineers (OSE). It must also be officially approved by the Sector Skills Unit (SSU) for engineering professions. All submissions must be completed via the designated electronic system.
Starting September 1, 2025, individuals employed or seeking employment in accounting must obtain a Professional Classification Certificate. This also applies to those in finance and auditing positions. The certificate is necessary for these professions. The certificate must be obtained from the Sector Skills Unit for Accounting, Finance, and Auditing. This certificate will be a mandatory necessity for the issuance and renewal of work permits in the financial sector.
All employers and professionals should start the necessary steps promptly. This will help them adhere to the new regulations ahead of time. It will also allow them to avoid disruptions in employment status.
